Portfolio: Knit Picking

Subverting distinctions between craft and fine art, feminine and masculine, victims and perpetrators, this body of work is anchored by large scale paintings of knitting and knitting needles. While knitting as a craft has traditionally been associated with passive femininity, the making of baby blankets and holiday scarves, the vast sea of hand-knit pussy hats at the 2017 post-inaugural Women’s March on Washington, suggests a different narrative. Reimagining these tools of domesticity as the sharpened weapons of resistance, the paintings are intended to be unsettling to the viewer – reminders that sleeping giants sometimes awake, that those previously silenced sometimes find their voice, and that those who previously counted themselves as secure in their power over others are sometimes less safe than they imagine.
